Dance Callers, Musicians, and Instructors

LP Kelly

Picture
LP Kelly has been teaching and calling traditional dances throughout the
southern Appalachian mountains for over a decade. As one of the core
organizers of the Blacksburg Square Dance (one of the longest-running
traditional square dances in the country), he has had the opportunity both
to learn from the old masters and to mentor younger callers.

Kelly's calling resume includes public engagements at the Blacksburg
Square Dance, the Moss Art Center, Floydfest, the Floyd Country Store, the
Southern in Charlottesville, the Durham Rowdy Square, NC Squares, the
Hoppin' John festival, the DC Square Dance, the Baltimore Mobtown Square
Dance, as well as dozens of private events at weddings, parties, and late
night fiddler's conventions throughout the southern Appalachian mountains.

His teaching style is concise and efficient; his calling style is musical
and high-energy. Because if you're having a good time, you're doing it
right!

Becky Hill

Picture
BECKY is a percussive dancer, square dance caller, choreographer, community organizer, and educator. She grew up in Michigan, spent extensive time in West Virginia and now resides in Brentwood, Maryland. Becky has worked with Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, Good Foot Dance Company and Rhythm in Shoes, and has studied with an array of percussive dance luminaries. As an avid organizer and teacher, Becky's work is deeply rooted in the connections between music and community. She believes there is always more to learn and is dedicated to creating  innovative choreography rooted in Appalachian music and dance.

Furnace Mountain (Fri/Sat)

Picture
Furnace Mountain consists of Aimee Curl on bass and vocals, , Dave Van Deventer on fiddle and vocals, and Morgan Morrison on guitar, bouzouki, and vocals, Danny Knicely on mandolin and fiddle.  The band creates music that is at times lively and raucous, with spirited fiddle melodies weaving in and around the powerful rhythms of the bass and bouzouki, and other times poignant and poetic, with sublime vocal harmonies beautifully interpreting some of the oldest songs ever written.

Dolly & The Devil Stringband (Sat/Sun)

Picture
Dolly & the Devil Stringband with Janie Rothfield (Fiddle), Allan Carr (Guitar), Rick Davidson (Banjo) and Joanne Davidson (Bass). "Dolly & the Devil” is a pseudonym for a collection of musicians spearheaded by Joanne & Rick Davidson. The name came to life during the making of “Festival Season” with Al Tharp & friends, a two-volume concept album. We hope the artist & album name provokes thought and the spirit of bringing people together.
Their passion can be heard in the music’s power, the friendship felt in its flow.

Brad Kolodner

Picture
Baltimore-based clawhammer banjoist Brad Kolodner represents the next generation of Old-Time musicians pushing the boundaries of the tradition into uncharted territory. Regarded for his delicate touch, expressive style, and original compositions, Kolodner has rapidly gained national attention for his unique approach to the banjo at just 28 years of age. Awarded the 2016 IBMA Momentum Award for Industry Involvement, Kolodner is helping to lead the charge as a performer, teacher, DJ for WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, jam leader, community builder and ambassador for Old-Time music. He regularly performs across the country in a duo with his father Ken Kolodner, a world renowned hammered dulcimer player and with the acoustic roots quartet Charm City Junction.

Janine Smith

Picture
The Janine Smith experience is what you get when you cross a howdy-ma’am-BBQ-and-beans Honky Tonk with Zoom contra and sprinkle on some twinkly lights for sass. She’ll bring you a night of fun dances, from squares to contras, heck maybe a Singing Square, whether you’re sitting, standing, or somewhere in between. Her teaching is clear and to-the-point, though she has been known to goof around a bit. She’s one of the “Hot Square Babes”, a quintet of female callers who threw a monthly Square Dance Party in the DC area from 2004-2018, and a founding member of the DC Square Dance Collective.
